In the fall of 2004, a team of students at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, led by Professor Ellen Woolford, set out to explore Tumbuka, a Bantu language of Eastern Africa. Specifically, we studied the dialect of Karonga a region in the north of Malawi. Ten undergraduates study topics ranging from noun classes and verb morphology to negation and syllable structure. Making this work possible were the generous donations of time and patience of our consultant, Siegfried Mkandawire, a graduate student studying education at the University. Through weekly meetings with him, we gathered data and tested hypotheses about Karonga Tumbuka. |
